What Plan B® One-Step is

  • Plan B® One-Step is the only FDA-approved single tablet, single dose emergency contraceptive (levonorgestrel, 1.5 mg) currently available, composed of one progestin-only tablet. When taken as directed— within 72 hours (3 days) after contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse—approximately seven out of eight women who would have gotten pregnant will not become pregnant after taking Plan B® One-Step. Plan B® One-Step is more effective the sooner it’s taken, especially within the first 24 hours.1

  • Plan B® One-Step is available behind the counter at pharmacies and sold under the supervision of pharmacy staff. A prescription is needed only for women under 17.

  • Plan B® One-Step is proven to have a better safety profile than the Yuzpe regimen (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol).1

  • Women may experience contraceptive failure and clinicians can play a pivotal role in ensuring that women have accurate information about how to access and use emergency contraception. 11

What Plan B® One-Step isn't

  • Plan B® One-Step isn’t RU-486 (the abortion pill); Plan B® One-Step will not affect an existing pregnancy.

  • Plan B® One-Step isn’t a substitute for a routine contraception method; it should not be used that way, because it is not as effective as other methods of birth control used consistently and correctly.
